Background of the Study:
Child labor remains a significant human rights issue in many parts of Nigeria, particularly in rural areas like Jega, Kebbi State. Despite national and international legal frameworks prohibiting child labor, including the Nigerian Child Rights Act and the International Labour Organization's (ILO) conventions, child labor persists in many sectors such as agriculture, domestic work, and street trading (Adewumi & Muhammad, 2023). The economic hardships faced by families in Jega, compounded by the lack of access to quality education and social services, make children vulnerable to exploitation in labor markets. Children who engage in labor often suffer from physical and psychological abuse, limited educational opportunities, and an increased risk of exploitation.

The impact of child labor on children's rights is profound, as it deprives them of their right to education, protection, and overall well-being. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of child labor in Jega, its root causes, and the implications for human rights, particularly focusing on how child labor undermines the future prospects of these children and exacerbates socio-economic challenges.

Statement of the Problem:
Child labor in Jega, Kebbi State, is a persistent violation of children’s rights, which hampers their development and access to education. Many children in Jega are forced to work to contribute to family income, often at the expense of their education and physical health. Despite various legal provisions against child labor, it remains widespread due to factors such as poverty, ignorance, and inadequate enforcement of existing laws. This study aims to investigate the extent of child labor in Jega and its impact on children's rights, as well as the socio-economic factors that perpetuate this issue.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the prevalence of child labor in Jega, Kebbi State.

  2. To examine the impact of child labor on the rights and well-being of children in Jega.

  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of existing policies and interventions in addressing child labor in Jega.

Research Questions:

  1. What is the prevalence of child labor in Jega, Kebbi State?

  2. How does child labor affect the rights and well-being of children in Jega?

  3. What are the challenges in addressing child labor in Jega, and how effective are existing policies?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Child labor is prevalent in Jega, Kebbi State, and has significant negative impacts on children’s rights.

  2. Poverty and lack of access to education are major factors contributing to child labor in Jega.

  3. Existing laws and interventions are insufficient in curbing child labor in Jega.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study will focus on child labor in Jega, Kebbi State, particularly in the agricultural and informal sectors. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews with children, parents, community leaders, and government officials. Limitations may include the difficulty in obtaining reliable data from families engaged in child labor and potential resistance from local authorities in acknowledging the prevalence of child labor.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Child Labor: Any form of work that deprives children of their childhood, education, or opportunities for development, and that is harmful to their physical and mental well-being.

  • Human Rights: The basic rights and freedoms that every individual is entitled to, regardless of their age, gender, or nationality.

  • Prevalence: The widespread occurrence or frequency of a phenomenon, in this case, child labor.
